My labor and delivery story

Well a lot has changed since the last time I posted...my little man has finally entered the world!

On Sunday, April 7th I started getting contractions around 9:30pm, Zach was sleeping so I just laid on the couch and tried to relax as best I could, they lasted until about 1:00am.  I took a shower, and they stopped so I went to bed.  The next morning when I woke up, I was fairly crampy and was starting to get contractions again.  I thought it might be the real deal so I started doing things around the house like dusting, laundry, dishes and last minute things in Hank's room, I couldn't imagine going to the hospital and thinking about dirty dishes in the sink!  Zach was at work but I was texting him and letting him know I was contracting.  By the time he got home around 3, my contractions were about 6-7 minutes apart and lasting about a minute.  He went to the garage to finish up the final touches on the dresser in case our little guy was coming soon.  We then went for a walk around the block, after we got home, we decided maybe we should go to the hospital just to be sure.

We got to the hospital around 6:00pm and my contractions were getting stronger and closer together.  They checked me and said I was about 2-3 cm dilated, and said his head was super low down and that they would watch me for about an hour then let us go home.  After about an hour they came in and checked me and said I was about 3-4 cm, and said they'd keep watching me.  They came in a little while later and said I was 4-5 cm and that I would be spending the night and having him the next day. :) I called my parents and they hit the road for their 7 hour drive.  I was having quite a bit of pain at this point so they gave me staydal (sp?), I felt like I was completely wasted, it was awesome, lol.  I fell asleep for a while and got another dose a little while later.  I went to sleep again then they came in and told me if I wanted the epidural I should get it then because the anesthesiologist was going into a c-section and wouldn't be available. So I got the epidural, it didn't hurt at all, but it was so weird when the electric shock went through my leg.  I went to sleep for a little while longer, then they came in and broke my water at about 4:30am.  I went back to bed, and woke up at 6:00am and couldn't sleep, I just wanted to get the show on the road and meet my boy! They came in about 7:30 and said I was fully dilated and I would be having him shortly.  So exciting!

They were very impressed with how fast I progressed and said my body was made for delivering babies, yeah right!  I started pushing between 7:30 and 8:00 I think, I pushed for 3 1/2 hours to no avail.  I wasn't moving him at all.  By this time I was completely exhausted, and my back hurt so bad, I was bawling and they were all trying to calm me down, it was just too overwhelming at that point.  They said they would try to vacuum him out but then if that didn't work I would have to have a c-section.  I was pretty bummed that I wasn't getting the delivery I wanted but I just wanted to meet him and I had absolutely no energy left.  The vacuum didn't work and they got me all prepped and ready for surgery, I was so scared as I have never had surgery before except my wisdom teeth.  They wheeled me into the O.R. and it was just crazy madness.  There were so many doctors, and nurses and so many people just poking and proding me.  Well at 12:08 in the afternoon, my little man came into the world!  They whisked him over to weigh him and stuff and I bawled some more because they had promised they would show him to me right away and they didn't, so Zach went over to watch while they measured him and he took pictures.  Then they whisked him away to the nursery and I was so upset, nothing was going as I had planned.

The rest is pretty much a blur but this is what happened.  Apparently during my delivery, my cervix ruptured and seperated from my vagina and my uterus seperated from my vagina as well, so they were three seperate parts.  So after my c-section I spent about 3 1/2- 4 hours in the O.R. pretty much getting "reconstructive" surgery on my lady parts.  I didn't get to meet Hank until like 5 hours after I had him and I was so drugged up that I don't even remember it.  It was pretty crazy and emotional for everyone.  I lost about 4-5 units of blood and needed a blood transfusion.  I also apparently have a weird shaped pelvic bone so he couldn't fit, so when they kept saying "his head it RIGHT there" I'm not sure what they were feeling, as he never made his way down the birth canal...

It was saddening not getting the delivery I wanted, but I got my amazing son, so he makes it all worth it.  All the doctors that operated on me said they have never seen anything like this and said they reviewed my case like 300 times and just think that between pushing for over 3 hours and trying the vacuum that my parts just couldn't handle it.  Even though I didn't want an epidural thank GOD I got one, as I probably would have passed out from the pain of my cervix rupturing.

They aren't 100% sure if I will ever be able to get pregnant again, or carry a baby, which makes me sad but if God only intended for us to have one baby, at least we have this amazing, perfect baby boy. :)  They said we FOR SURE can't try and get pregnant for AT LEAST one year, and that is perfectly fine with me! ;)  I want to enjoy Hank before we ever try and get pregnant again.  And they said if I get pregnant again then I for sure have to have a c-section.

I'm healing up pretty well I'd say for having pretty major surgery.  I'm not allowed to drive for at least 2 weeks and I'm not allowed to lift anything heavier than Hank.  Thank goodness my parents are here and helping me, I don't know what we'd do without them!

So thank you to everyone who sent well wishes and prayers, we really appreciated it!
